How to Win Poker
Poker is all about making decisions and the earliest decisions are the most important! Quick and correct situation review is the key element of the game. Do it correctly and you will know how to win poker. The more we are into the game and there is no chance to win, the more serious consequences we will have to face. And contrary, the faster we realize we can win, the more we increase the chance to win adjusting the game style properly. In connection with the above, especially the first two turns of the game: before Flop and on Flop, are the most important. There is another important rule connected with above-mentioned one: the value of the cards we have is higher than the value of the cards we hope to get. When we have four cards of the same suit we usually imagine how good it would be to get the fifth one and hit the jackpot. However we should never forget that so far we only have insignificant hand of four cards which can be beaten easily by the weakest one pair. In such case your play should be based on the likelihood of winning and on the pot you can get. If the statistics aren’t favorable, don’t hesitate to pass.
Those two rules are the basis of the elementary winning strategy in poker: Pass when you have bad cards and play aggressively with the good ones. Even though it sounds easy and simple, applying it in the real life demands a lot of discipline. In the majority of games its better to pass - its worth to play when your cards are really strong and turn odds to your side.
Most common situations
During the game you usually face three basic situations:
- You received bad cards with no chance to win.
- You received bad cards but they give you a chance for a strong hand, if you get the expected cards in the succeeding deal.
- You received strong cards and you probably already can win but the succeeding deals can improve your opponents’ cards and finally your chances become smaller.
re.1 Nothing is to be considered. You better pass (Fold). Although you can always count to get better cards in the next deal, in this case it’s more probable it will bring higher benefit to your opponents instead of yourself. At the same time further game would be disadvantageous for you.
re.2 Even though at this moment you have no chance to win, it is very likely that the next deal will bring you the expected card which will improve your hand. Therefore, further game is advantageous for you. However, as you can’t be sure to get the desired card and in several cases you will loose, the eventual victory should be the highest possible to compensate for the deals in which you loose. Therefore, you should care about as many people as possible playing the longest possible in order to increase the Pot. At the same time you shouldn’t play very aggressively (raising the bank - Raise) not to frighten your opponents. In such situation the most reasonable solution is to wait (Check) or keep on playing when the bet has been raised by someone else (Call), if many people entered the game before you.
re.3 To some extent this situation is opposite to the previous one. Even though at present your hand is the best one (for example: One Pair of Aces), usually it is only one high Pair and succeeding deals can bring your opponents better cards (for example a Straight). Therefore you should care for the biggest number of players to quit the game before they could get better cards. In order to attain this you should frighten your opponents by playing aggressively, which means you should raise the bet (Raise).
